This page contains answers to common questions handled in our support effort, along with some tips and tricks that we have found useful and presented here as questions.

Note: In these answers we will follow a few shorthand conventions for describing user-interface procedures. Key combinations will be presented like this: Ctrl+Alt+Delete, which means that you should press and hold down the Control key, the Alt key, and the Delete key at the same time. Menu selections will be presented like this: File->Open, which means that you should open the File menu, and then make the Open selection.

How do I ...Replace a shooter that drops out in the middle of the league ?

When a shooter drops out, there are two options.  If there is not a replacement for the shooter, then the team can use league average for the missing shooter.  If this option is used, be certain that the shooters name is replaced with "Open" and "Lg Average" is placed on the line below the name line.  This will keep the league average score that the scorekeeper inserts for both rounds from part of the league average calculation.  Do not enter the quotation marks.  If a replacement shooter is available, type "Replacement" on the name line and the new shooter's name on the line below.  Then take the scores for the first rounds that the replacement shoots and enter them for all the past weeks to make that handicap and average correct.

How is the handicap calculated ... ?

When a league is initialized, two parameters are input that determine handicap calculation.  The first parameter is the cap and it can range from 23.0 to 25.0.  The cap represents the maximum score that can be obtained using a handicap.  The second parameter is the handicap rate and it is a decimal figure with a maximum of 1.0.  Since two rounds are shot each week, the cap must be doubled in the calculation.  Assume that the cap entered is 24 and the rate entered is .7, then the handicap for the first week would be 70% of the difference between 48 and the total targets shot.  In ensuing weeks, a multiple of 48 would be used against the cumulative targets broken.

Why doesn't ... SCOREBASE provide for more than 7 fields an 14 teams?

Many skeet and trap ranges have more than 7 fields and many have less than 7.  However, few leagues have more than 14 teams.  A 14 team league would run for 13 weeks or a full quarter.  Not many clubs work with a league that lasts longer.  To provide for a greater number of fields or teams would be a waste of resources.

Would SCOREBASE function for other than skeet and trap leagues ... ?

The system works well for five-stand leagues and sporting clay leagues that shoot only 50 targets each week.  If a league does not use handicaps, set the cap at 25 and the rate at 1.0 and the actual scores will be used.

Can I assign handicaps rather than let the system calculate them ... ?

No, the principle behind this system is that it is designed for handicap calculation.  We can provide the other type of system.

How do I maintain a record of absent shooters, banks, pre-shoots and post shooting

The left column on each team worksheet is available for various notes such as date that a pre-shoot is for and the score e.g., PR7/15-25/24.  All post shooting must be accomplished prior to running the new week macro.

What version of Microsoft Excel was used to develop SCOREBASE?

The system was developed using Excel 2000.  The VBA macros came from Office 2000.  No earlier versions have been tested.

What are the steps to correct a problem with score entry after the week has been Finalized?

This is a common problem and is easily fixed.  Remember that Finalize can be run as many time as needed until the New Week function is run.  Just correct the score problem and run Finalize.  The reports will reflect the new or changed information.  If the New Week function has been executed, then entries that are made will change the associated averages, handicaps, number of straights, etc but will not change the win/lose results.

If a league with 5 teams is going to run through twice, how many weeks will the league last?

Since each team will shoot against each of the remaining teams twice, the league will run for 8 weeks.

What can be done to accommodate a league with 16 or 20 teams?

One approach is to divide the league into divisions so that each division is made up of 8 to 10 teams.  Then schedule the division on different fields or at a different time or perhaps, even a different day.  At the end of the regular schedule, set up a league with manual handicaps for the top teams in each division to score a "shoot-off".

Will the system prepare score-sheets for the current week?

When the new league is formatted, there is a parameter to request  the type of league.  The user must answer whether the league is a skeet, trap, or sporting clay league.  There is also a parameter that determines whether or not the shooter's names are to be printed.  To avoid confusion during the actual scoring, the user must have predetermined the shooting order for each team when the print names option is selected.  The sheets must be prepared on the actual shooting date.

What if a league is to be run using manual handicaps?

There is an option to use manual handicaps rather than the automatic handicaps that are recalculated each week.  This is a parameter when the "New League" tool is executed.  However, a mixture of the two methods is not allowed.  This is generally used when developing a league for shoot-offs.

What if a league is to allow substitution?

A league can be run using substitutes for absent shooters.  The total number of substitutes can not exceed 18 and for each multiple of 6 substitutes entered the number of active teams will be reduced by one.  Therefore, should a league allow 12 subs, the total of active teams will be limited to 12.  When scores are input, a notation as to which sub is replacing each absent shooter is input.  This causes the substitute's score to be used in the win/lose calculation.  When the next "new week" function is run, the sub's score is removed and the absent shooter 's scores are replaced with his average score minus 2 plus his handicap.
